Computer-Based IELTS/ Computer-Delivered IELTS

Besides the paper-based IELTS test, Computer Based IELTS has been introduced recently and are available to a limited number of locations globally. This computer-delivered test is known as CB IELTS. Computer-Based IELTS is available only to some selective test centres. However, the IELTS partners intend to make the computer-based module available in more places in the future.

Listening, Reading and Writing parts of the computer-delivered test are done on a computer while the speaking tests will still be conducted face-to-face by a human examiner and not on a computer.

If you select this option, considering your test centre offers this, you will take the Listening, Reading and Writing sections on a computer. The Speaking test will remain face to face with a certified IELTS Examiner. The question types, their difficulty levels and the scoring system remain the same.

It is worth noticing that, all the four sections of computer-delivered IELTS are completed on the same day. Be advised that, if you have a special requirement, please register for IELTS on paper, as this format is available worldwide, and caters to all test takers regardless of need. If you select IELTS on a computer, you will use a different registration system. Please contact the IELTS officials to know if the computer-delivered test is available in your location and what would be the registration process.

You do not need to be an advanced computer user to take the computer-based IELTS. Rather you need to know only some basic operations of a computer to do fairly well in the computer-based IELTS. Keep in mind that, in CB IELTS your English skill is evaluated, not your computer skill.

What's new about computer-delivered IELTS?

  • Your result will be published faster. The result of computer-delivered IELTS will be available 5-7 days after the test.
  • It ensured that the speaking timeslots are available on the same day which means you can take all the four sections in a single day.
  • You have the option for last-minute test registration as the registration will only close 3 days before the test date. Keep in mind that it is subject to seat availability.
  • Reading and Listening sections will be auto-marked by computers while the Speaking test will remain to be graded by a trained IELTS examiner.

Despite the changes mentioned above, the test remains fairly the same. It will cost the same and the question types would be the same. Here are a few aspects of Computer-delivered IELTS which are same as they are for the Paper-based IELTS test.

  • Price: You pay the same for paper-based and computer-based IELTS test.
  • Question types: You will have to deal with the same types of questions.
  • Level of difficulty: The level of difficulty remains the same for the computer-delivered test as it is for the paper-based test.
  • Scoring from 1 (non-user) to 9 (expert user): Computer-delivered tests use the same scoring method.
  • Recognition by over 10,000 organisations worldwide.
  • Face-to-face Speaking test: Speaking test of a computer-delivered IELTS is conducted and assessed by a trained IELTS examiner.

Actually, the price of the CBT is not the same as the PBT, for example, in Turkey for the CBT (conducted by IDP) is more expensive (at least 32% more expensive) than the PBT.So you need to check with the centre in your city about the price.
